As he reflects, "You think about a 19-year-old, 17-year-old kid, you want to be rich and famous and change the world, and you want to be the big 'it' thing. And when you start to search for a cure for a disease, that stuff is just so silly."

He realized that his unique position in Hollywood could be a powerful tool for advocacy. "The point where it got boring and tedious turned into a lever to operate a much bigger machine," he explains.

"I was diagnosed, and I went into a hidden retreat and hid for seven years, didn’t tell anyone about it. And then when it occurred to me that I might go public with it, I weighed that with my wife [Tracy Pollan] and myself, [had] a lot of conversations about it," Fox shares. "And I realized it was a unique opportunity."
Overcoming Challenges

"For a long time, I've been saying 'f--- vanity.' It’s not about vanity. It's not about how you look. And that's the thing that helps patients move forward in their minds; they say, 'This is what it is,'" Fox explains.
